Exploring Cosmic Eclipse: Xatu and Will

Cosmic Eclipse is a huge set with multiple exciting new archetypes, but one of the cards with the most rogue potential is Xatu.

Xatu is a stage 1 with only 80 HP, but its attacks more than makes up for its shortages.

For one psychic energy, Xatu confuses the opponent’s active Pokemon.

And for one psychic energy and one colorless energy, Xatu has a chance to leave your opponent with 10 HP: “Flip a coin. If heads, put damage counters on your opponent’s Active Pokémon until its remaining HP is 10.”

Nobody likes putting their faith in chance, which is why Xatu needs to take advantage of a handy new supporter in Cosmic Eclipse, Will.

“The next time you flip any number of coins for the effect of an attack, ability, or trainer card this turn, choose heads or tails for the first coin flip,” the card reads.

As long as you manage to play Will, you’ll be able to get your opponent down to 10 HP, which is great against GX and Tag Team Pokemon because they won’t be able to keep up in prize trades.

But you’ll need a way to finish off your opponent — there’s a few ways to do it.

Xatu pairs nicely with Shrine of Punishment, which places 1 damage counter on each GX Pokemon in between turns.

Also consider running Spell Tag, which will let you place 4 damage counters on your opponents Pokemon when/if Xatu is knocked out.

Okay, but what about the rest of the deck?

Here are two potential deck-building options.

1. Xatu + Support

Xatu doesn’t necessarily need much energy acceleration because it only uses two energies. It’s a pretty straight-forward card.

That’s why Xatu might be able to work on its own with a deck focused on getting as many Xatus out as fast as possible.

The two most common support Pokemon could find their way in this deck: Jirachi and Dedenne-GX.

You’ll also want to use cards that help you retrieve Xatus and Natus from the discard pile. After all, you can afford to have up to 5 Xatus knocked out.

Brock’s Grit and the new Lana’s Fishing Rod from Cosmic Eclipse could help you out.

With Lana’s Fishing Rod, you can shuffle a Pokemon and a Pokemon Tool card from your discard pile into your deck.

Cosmic Eclipse also has another fantastic card: Great Catcher. By discarding two cards, you can switch your opponent’s active Pokemon with a benched GX Pokemon.

You might also consider running Lt. Surge’s Strategy to play Will with other supporters. Cosmic Eclipse’s Cynthia & Caitlin would help you bring back Will and other useful supporters.

“Put a Supporter card from your discard pile into your hand. You can’t choose Cynthia & Caitlin or a card you discarded with the effect of this card,” the card reads.

Its second effect is: “When you play this card, you may discard another card from your hand. If you do, draw 3 cards.”

Here’s an example decklist:

4-4 Xatu

4 Jirachi

1 Dedenne-GX

2. Xatu in Malamar

Alternatively, Xatu might be able to fit in a Malamar deck. After all, Xatu already synergizes well with Giratina.

Giratina’s Distortion Door ability will help you finish off your opponent’s Pokemon if they decide to switch out.

“Once during your turn (before your attack), if this Pokemon is in your discard pile, you may put it onto your Bench. If you do, put 1 damage counter on 2 of your opponent’s Benched Pokemon,” Giratina’s ability reads.

Admittedly, adding another stage 1 to Malamar will feel clunky, but you won’t need to add too many extra cards. Malamar already runs Spell Tag and Mysterious Treasure, which both work great with Xatu.

Here’s an example decklist:

Pokemon: 20

4-4 Malamar

3-3 Xatu
