The Pomemon TCG’s equivalent to Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon has been officially revealed, and it looks like VMAX cards will be extremely powerful.
Some of the Sword & Shield cards revealed so far are Snorlax VMAX, Lapras VMAX, and Meowth VMAX — all of these cards have at least 300 HP.
The “balance” to these cards is that they give up three prizes, just like Tag Team Pokemon. Additionally, VMAX Pokemon are Stage 1 and evolve from the already-powerful Pokemon-V.
However, these cards look like they will be even more powerful than Tag Team Pokemon.
Let’s not forget that Pikachu & Zekrom-GX (Team Up) dominated the meta upon its release (and still has some modest success at tournaments), and that card only has 240 HP. Pikarom wasn’t released that long ago, but Pokemon cards now have up to 340 HP.
Let’s take a closer look at Meowth VMAX (which seems weaker than the powerful Snorlax VMAX) to make a point about how strong VMAX cards are.
Meowth VMAX has 300 HP and a pretty decent attack. It’s attack does 200 damage for four colorless energy. It also allows the player to draw 3 cards. With welder, four colorless energy is no problem. And the effect of drawing 3 cards shouldn’t be understated either — that’s extremely useful.
Just judging by HP alone, Pikarom looks like a little baby in comparison, but I guess that’s what they were going for — they teased VMAX by making Pikarom look minuscule.
And I’m not saying Meowth VMAX is going to be a behemoth that will dominate the metagame like Pikarom.
However, I am saying that Meowth VMAX is just the tip of the iceberg.
If they made a Meowth card that powerful, imagine how ridiculous Charizard VMAX is going to be.
