Pokemon Diamond & Pearl’s Beta Sprites Reveal Unused Gender Variations

A collection of beta sprites for Pokemon Diamond & Pearl was leaked today, and while the leak is still unconfirmed, these legitimate-looking sprites reveal gender variations that never made it into the final game.

Here’s some of the weirdest new female variations that didn’t make the cut:

Charizard Pokemon Beta Sprite

Flygon Pokemon Beta Sprite

Arcanine Pokemon Beta Sprite

Kangaskhan Pokemon Beta Sprite

Pinsir Pokemon Beta Sprite

Mudkip Pokemon Beta Sprite

Growlithe Pokemon Beta Sprite

Raichu Pokemon Beta Sprite

Pikachu Pokemon Beta Sprite

Beedrill Pokemon Beta Sprite

Psyduck Pokemon Beta Sprite

Mr. Mime Pokemon Beta Sprite

Zangoose Pokemon Beta Sprite

Carvanha Pokemon Beta Sprite

Why they might be real

There are several details that might lend credit toward these leaked beta sprites.

The first detail is that the female Charmeleon sprite in this leak looks like a more polished version of the beta Charmeleon sprite previously leaked.

Additionally, the Munchlax and Weavile sprites in this leak look identical to an early screenshot of Diamond & Pearl. The sprites in the screenshot didn’t make it into the final game.

But don’t take my word for it. Helix Chamber, which has provided legitimate leaks in the past, seems to think the leak is probably real.

Why you should be skeptical

There are a lot of reasons to believe the leaked beta sprites are real, but there are also reasons to be skeptical.

As Twitter user TruVanillaYami, the sprites look a bit too sloppy to be official Pokemon sprites. However, some users speculate that the sprites are sloppy because they were still unfinished.

Regardless, here are some of the key points TruVanillaYami pointed out.

Whether or not the leak is legitimate, lets just be thankful that we didn’t end up with an awkward one-horned Charizard.

Update 12/26/2019

The leak has been confirmed as legitimate.
