Alolan Golem Is a Fun Budget Deck With High Damage Potential

If you’re looking for a fun budget deck or just want something new to play at league, you should check out this Alolan Golem (Team Up) deck.

Alolan Golem is an affordable card with high damage potential and extremely satisfying attacks. Obviously, this deck is not as powerful as something like Arceus & Dialga & Palkia GX, but it’s fun to pull off.

Its first attack is Electromagnetic Bomb, which allows you to: “Move any number of Lightning Energy from your benched Pokemon to this Pokemon. This attack does 20 damage for each Energy card you moved in this way.”

You should already be able to tell that Alolan Golem pairs nicely with Naganadel (Lost Thunder).

Its second attack costs 5 Energy in total, and requires you to discard 2 Energy to deal 190 damage. It’s a strong attack and you can get the Energy back easily with Naganadel.

It’s extremely satisfying powering up an Alolan Golem by moving Energy from your benched Nags.

Tip for players on a budget: Naganadel might not be the most budget-friendly choice, but it was released as a league promo. Ask around at your local game store, and some kind people might have a few laying around somewhere.

The core gameplay

The goal of the deck is relatively simple: get Energy onto your Naganadels to start hitting hard with Alolan Golem. However, there are a lot of cards to help you along the way.

In order to give the deck some speed and to put Energy in the discard pile, you need to run a few copies of Zebstrika (Lost Thunder). Zebstrika’s ability allows you to discard your hand and draw 4 cards. A more high-budget version of this deck would run Dedenne-GX (Unbroken Bonds) instead.

Another useful card from Lost Thunder is Electropower, which will power up your attacks by 30. This will give your Electromagnetic Bomb some more power if your Nags aren’t charged up enough.

Volkner is also extremely useful because it will allow you to search for Item cards like Pokemon Communication or Rare Candy, ensuring that you’re not stuck with an Alolan Geodude.

And if you’re a regular reader of Off Meta, you’ll know that we’re a huge fan of Buff Padding.

Since Alolan Golem has a retreat cost of 4, Buff Padding will give it an additional 50 HP for a total of 230 HP.

This deck is pretty straight-forward, and it’s great for teaching beginner players about Energy acceleration.
