This Torkoal Disruption Deck Will Deny Your Opponent’s Energy

Torkoal (Cosmic Eclipse) has the potential to ruin your opponent’s day by sending their Energy to the discard pile.

Energy denial is a powerful mechanic in the Pokemon TCG, so the cards that have built-in Energy denial usually aren’t good — Gyarados (Team Up), Lycanroc-GX (Team Up), and Seaking (Sword & Shield) are just a few examples.

Unfortunately, Torkoal is not an exception to that rule — it has low HP, moderate damage, and a high Energy cost. But despite its deficiencies, it can be frustrating to play against.

For three Fire Energy, Torkoal does 100 damage, discards an Energy card from itself, and discards an Energy from your opponent’s Active Pokemon.

Torkoal and Crushing Hammer can be a hilarious combo to deny your opponent’s Energy.

And fortunately, Torkoal is a Fire type, making energy acceleration ridiculously easy.

Feel the Burn

Torkoal’s typing is great because it allows you to utilize the myriad of absolutely broken Fire cards in the format.

In order to get Torkoal setup in a single turn, use Welder to attach additional Energy, and use cards like Giant Hearth and Energy Spinner to find Fire Energy.

And if the draw power from Welder wasn’t enough, Heat Factory Prism Star will speed up this deck even more. Since you’re discarding cards with Heat Factory Prism Star and Torkoal’s attack, run a few copies of Fire Crystal.

Disrupting Your Opponent

This deck uses the two of the most powerful disruption cards in format: Crushing Hammer and Reset Stamp.

Reset Stamp is great for shrinking your opponent’s hand, making it even harder for them to find Energy. When I was testing this deck, Reset Stamp was particularly helpful in games against Baby Blacephalon.

Another card that’s proved to be useful in this deck is Great Catcher. Sometimes your opponent will attempt to build up a powerful Pokemon on their bench to avoid Torkoal’s Energy denial — not on my watch!

And if you ever need time to build up your Torkoal, Lillie’s Poke Doll can buy you a turn.

You’ll be able to easily find these Trainer cards by using Jirachi (Team Up). Combined with Escape Board and Switch, you can even pull off multiple Stellar Wishes in one turn, if necessary.

Deck Rating: C-

One of this deck’s main issues is that it’s difficult to get Torkoal setup consistently. With the lack of search Trainers for non-GX Pokemon at the moment, this deck can brick hard if you don’t draw into a Torkoal on turn 1. The ideal scenario is to use Welder on turn 1, but that might not be possible if you have to Cynthia or another Supporter to refresh your hand.

Another issue holding this deck back is its reliance on RNG — your chances of winning decrease significantly if you miss most of your Crushing Hammer flips.

However, if you manage to hit most of your flips, you’ll have a huge advantage. The meta is starting to see decks that run several different types of Energy — there’s a huge disruption possibility there.

Unfortunately, your advantage can be mitigated with cards like Malamar or Welder, and those decks are extremely common. And your Energy denial doesn’t have a huge impact on Pokemon that only require one Energy.

It’s a fun deck, and it’s earned me some wins, but it’s inconsistency and bad matchups gives this deck a “C-” rating.
